 Severe Weather Preparedness

Thunderstorm        Tornado        Winter Weather        Flooding

Visit the National Weather Service website for current weather information.

Severe weather can occur at any time, whether a winter storm, thunderstorm, ice storm, or tornado.

It is not only important to understand the terminology used to warn of impending storms, but also to prepare an emergency plan for your home or business before an incident occurs.

WEATHER WATCH

WEATHER WARNING

When a watch is issued it means conditions are favorable for sever weather to occur. A watch is usually longer in time and gives you time to prepare.

 This is the time to:

Turn your radio or television on to a local station
Inform family members of the watch and know their locations
Ensure your three days of emergency supplies are in place

A warning is issued when the storm is actually occurring. This usually leaves very little time, if any, to prepare.

You should:

Immediately seek shelter
DO NOT CALL 9-1-1 UNLESS YOU HAVE AN EMERGENCY
Listen to local media for further information

What to do

Severe Thunderstorms

Are extremely dangerous and can spawn tornadoes. You should stay inside, keeping away from windows and not use telephones or electrical appliances.

Winter Weather

Stay inside if possible with an adequate food and fuel supply. If you need to travel, make sure family members know the route you are taking and equip your vehicle with an emergency supply kit.

Tornados

Can occur with little or no warning. Seek shelter in the innermost room on the lowest level of your home. Avoid areas that have large freestanding roofs. Stay sheltered until the warning has expired and the storm activity has left the area.

Flooding

Can occur very rapidly. Residents should be prepared to evacuate if necessary on a moment's notice. If you are driving, do not attempt to pass through freestanding water.
