"9-1-1, What is Your Emergency?" That is
how we answer our phone, and there is a reason for it. First
we want to reassure the caller that they did indeed get through to
our emergency number, and secondly to determine as quickly as
possible what the emergency is. That means that the reason you are
calling should be because there is an emergency.
In Livingston County when you need to have police, fire, or EMS department respond, all you need to to is dial 9-1-1. The dispatcher who receives your call will be asking specific questions about the nature of your call. They will also be verifying the location and telephone number you are calling from and the location of the incident. Depending on the nature of the call, when they are asking these questions, other dispatchers may be dispatching the necessary first responders. Please remain calm and continue to answer the necessary questions that will be needed for the first responding departments. Depending on the telephone service provider, computer or VoIP telephone calls into Central Dispatch may or may not display the caller's telephone number and location. Some service providers are not forwarding the caller's numbers and location at this time. Dispatchers will have to obtain the telephone number and location of the call from the caller. If the call is abandoned or the caller does not respond over the telephone, a call back from Central Dispatch may not be possible. Without this information Central Dispatch will not be able to send the necessary first responders. Please ensure your computer or VoIP telephone service provider forwards this information during a 9-1-1 call. If you have a specific question which may be answered by the individual police, fire, or EMS department, we ask you to dial their department directly. Phone numbers may be obtained in your local telephone book or in the 911 Tips & Information file (see link below). Please take a moment to read through the information contained in the PDF file below to find out the proper way to use this valuable resource. |
