The Juvenile Unit of the Family Division of the 44th
Circuit Court has the responsibility of handling complaints regarding
delinquent children under 17 years of age and of neglect and abuse cases
where children are under 18 years of age. Referrals are made by
individuals, schools, police agencies, and social agencies in the
community.
The portion of Michigan Law giving authority to the Juvenile Court is the Juvenile Code. The Juvenile Court will only become involved if community agencies are unable to meet the needs of the child and family, or in the event the matter is so serious it should come into Juvenile Court. Click on the following to learn more about these specific matters:
It is the philosophy of the Court that most children can best be served while remaining in their own homes. However, when parents are unable or unwilling to exercise their rightful control and responsibilities or when delinquent children fail to respond to the efforts of families and agencies, the Court will remove such children from their homes in order to protect the community and to initiate programs to change the attitude and behavior of these children.
