Drainage Projects

The office of the Livingston County Drain Commissioner employs a Drain Maintenance crew, and owns a variety of equipment for drain related construction activities. Additional equipment is rented by us on an as needed basis.

Drain projects are divided into 2 categories: 
 

Maintenance Activities and Petitioned Projects
Maintenance Activities may be performed by our Drain Maintenance Crew or may be subcontracted to a local contractor, depending on the project scope. Maintenance activities are typically lower in cost than petitioned activities.

Petitioned Projects these projects require the request of a local unit of government or the signatures of landowners to begin. Petitioned Projects may involve, the use of an engineer to draw construction plans, acquisition of easements, public hearings, and or the use of contractors

Storm Water Drainage Systems

The Drain Commission also maintains approximately 400 drains in Livingston County. These drains are under the jurisdiction of the Drain Commissioner pursuant to the Michigan Drain Code, also known as act 40 of the Public Acts of 1956, as amended. this existing law is currently in the process of being updated by the state legislature.
