Workgroup Objectives:
Treatment Goal/Objectives
1. Increase access to treatment for consumers at the
appropriate “stage of change”.
Strategies/Activities:
• Obtain information on “best practices” from Columbus, Ohio.
• Provide training to service providers, the court, and others on the Stages
of Change model.
• Develop a document that provides a “crosswalk” between the Stages of
Change model and the current system of services.
2. Increase knowledge of diagnostic criteria and need for
early intervention services.
Strategies/Activities:
• Provide training to service providers, the court, medical providers,
pharmacies, and others on the diagnostic criteria (DSM-IV and ASAM),
definitions of abuse versus dependency, and the limitations of the current
systems of assessment and treatment.
• Impact of dependency on individuals and community “denials”
3. Increase availability of local detox services and
transitional housing for those using substances.
Strategies/Activities:
• Collect data on how many people are utilizing detox and residential
treatment, where are they being served, how often is transportation an
issue, determine the impact on the jail and hospital system.
• Explore the possibility of Brighton Hospital providing detox services in
the community through a contract with the Washtenaw Community Health
Organization.
• Create additional transitional housing in the county for those using
substances.
4. Increase knowledge and training of service providers on
adolescent co-occurring disorders.
Strategies/activities:
• Develop a common understanding of the issue and definition.
• Collect data on youth currently served and their diagnosis.
• Survey service providers to determine training needs – conduct training to
fulfill these needs.
• Collect information on best practice models for co-occurring treatment for
youth.
• Develop a standardized assessment tool.
