Junior Master Gardener Program

Junior master gardeners at workThis six-week learning experience is designed for Livingston County youth in third through fifth grades. A portion of each session is devoted to hands-on projects to take home. Participants learn about many areas of gardening and insects and do ten hours of volunteer service with a parent's supervision to become Certified Junior Master Gardeners.

Three of the sessions are held at English Gardens, 7341 W. Grand River, Brighton. Three other sessions are "on the road." One session will be at the DNR Tree Improvement Center, another at Johnston's Farm and Composting and the Bug Safari will be held at Colman Park in Green Oak Township.

Classes are held on six consecutive Tuesdays in late April and May. Volunteer work is done during the summer. Class members who have completed their volunteer time will be invited to the Junior Master Gardener Banquet, held in September.

Topics covered: Indoor plants, flowers, vegetables, insects and wildlife, soils, composting and environmental issues and trees and shrubs.

Registration for the Junior Master Gardener Program begins in late February and concludes the second week of April. A parent or adult must accompany the child.  Cost is $15 per student for the six-week course, notebook and supplies. All classes are taught by Certified Livingston County Master Gardeners.
